How to Estimate Body Fat

Every body fat measurement method has meaningful error. Here is how each one compares and how to use the number sensibly.

Overview

Body fat percentage is a more useful measure than bodyweight, because it distinguishes between the two things bodyweight lumps together.

The catch is that every practical way of measuring it carries meaningful error, and the methods available to most people carry a lot.

Error ranges from about 2 percent for DEXA to 8 percent or more for consumer impedance scales, so tracking the trend with one consistent method matters more than the absolute number.

A home impedance scale reading 22 percent one morning and 26 percent the next has not detected a change in your body. It has detected that you drank less water.

The tape method

The Navy method uses circumference measurements and needs nothing but a tape measure.

Men: measure neck and waist at the navel.

Women: measure neck, waist at the narrowest point, and hips at the widest.

Plug those, plus height, into any Navy body fat calculator. It is not precise, but it is free, repeatable, and the measurements themselves are useful trend data even if you ignore the percentage output.

Women carry more essential fat than men for physiological reasons. Comparing the two sets of numbers directly is not meaningful.

Very low body fat is not a health target. Below roughly 8 percent for men and 14 percent for women, hormonal function, sleep, mood and training performance all tend to suffer.

Using it sensibly

  • -Pick one method and use it consistently.
  • -Measure under the same conditions: morning, fasted, before drinking.
  • -Track the trend over months, not weeks.
  • -Pair it with waist measurements and photos, which have no error at all.

If your waist is shrinking and your lifts are holding, you are losing fat. That conclusion does not require knowing whether you are at 18 or 22 percent.
