Soreness tells you a session was unfamiliar, not that it was effective. Here is what causes it and what actually helps.

Overview
Delayed onset muscle soreness, or DOMS, is the stiffness and tenderness that appears roughly 24 to 48 hours after unfamiliar exercise.
The most persistent myth about it is that it measures workout quality. It does not. It measures novelty. A trained lifter making excellent progress is often not sore at all, and a beginner who did one unfamiliar session can barely walk for three days.

Mild to moderate soreness is not a reason to skip a session. Training a sore muscle is generally safe, and light activity often relieves the soreness.
