Meal Timing

Meal timing matters far less than the supplement industry implies, and slightly more than the sceptics claim. Here is where the line actually falls.

Meal timing is where nutrition marketing has done the most damage to people's sense of proportion.

Total daily intake, protein and calories, does the overwhelming majority of the work. Timing operates at the margins, and matters more for training performance than for body composition.

Notice that the two things timing genuinely affects are performance and appetite, and both of those indirectly help you train and eat consistently. That is a real benefit; it is just not the one it is usually sold as.

The anabolic window

The claim was that protein had to be consumed within roughly thirty minutes of training or the session was wasted.

What the evidence supports is far less dramatic. Elevated muscle protein synthesis lasts around 24 hours after a training session, and the practical window for protein intake is several hours either side. If you ate a protein-containing meal two hours before training, you are already covered.

Fat and fibre slow digestion, so the closer to training, the simpler the food should be. Training fasted is fine if you like it and your session quality holds up. For long or high volume sessions, most people perform better having eaten.

Post-workout eating

Have a meal with protein and carbohydrate within a few hours. That is genuinely the whole rule for most people.

The exception is athletes training twice in one day with under eight hours between sessions. There, rapid glycogen replenishment matters and immediate post-session carbohydrate is worth the effort.

Where fasting fits

Intermittent fasting produces fat loss when it produces a calorie deficit, which for many people it does, because a compressed eating window makes overeating harder.

The complications for people who train:

  • -Hitting 160g of protein in an eight hour window takes planning.
  • -Training fasted late in a fasting window often feels poor.
  • -It suits some people's appetite patterns beautifully and others not at all.

It is a tool for adherence, not a metabolic advantage.
